The Value of Ideas

August 18, 2020August 18, 2020Categories writing2 Comments on The Value of Ideas

Do you ever hold two conflicting, diametrically opposed ideas in your head at the same time? Two things that cannot possibly both be true, and yet you have somehow convinced yourself to believe both of them?  I do.  Probably more often than I even realize.  But two that I've been coming to terms with recently…

I've been so scatterbrained lately. Just got a lot on my mind. So I haven't really been reading much, and my writing has mostly been centered on editing and revision. It's felt good to be busy and occupied, but I'm glad to have a bit of a rest in April. What are you looking forward to this spring?
Some recent acquisitions! I'll be honest though, I haven't really been reading much this last week or so. I've mostly been rewatching Queer as Folk for the first time since I watched it in high school. I remembered loving it a lot, but while it's definitely dated and very limited in its perspective, story- and character-wise it holds up better than I expected. I ended up getting really into it and watching all five seasons in about a week. I love reading, of course, but there's also something really special about TV. I love how well I can get to know the characters in a long series, and how much I can watch them grow over time. Parts of Queer as Folk were really formative to me, so it was really nice getting to revisit that over the last several days.
I've been revising a lot lately, and also reading for my CP, which has meant having a little less time for reading this month. As a result, I'm slowly working my way through Landslide by Susan Conley, and I'm really loving it so far. Her language is lovely, as always, and the book is so adoring of Maine, which is delightful to read. It has such a unique mood to it, and I'm really enjoying taking my time with it.
A couple of recent reads! I thought the writing in Luster by Raven Leilani was so unique and fun to read, even though the actual subject matter was pretty bleak. If you've read it, what did you think of it?
I really enjoyed this debut by Robert Jones, Jr. It's a literary/historical novel about two enslaved men on a plantation, so it's a heavy read, but the writing is beautiful and the structure is so unique and interesting. I thought it was a really beautiful book. Has anyone else read it?
The books I ordered from @hellohellobooks arrived in the mail in these sweet little brown paper packages! 😍 Coincidentally, "brown paper packages" is one of my favorite phrases, I just love how it sounds so much. Swipe to see what was inside!
